Went to the New Jerusalem barrio of Jalapa today; one of the poorest in the city. I am translating for a group of nursing students from the states, ISLA, and am loving all the work they’re doing!

Plus, they give me free meals and I get to go to places around town I haven’t seen yet!

Smile Friday: building veggie gardens to profit the Casa Materna with some local jóvenes.

This is how I’ve spent mornings the past few days. A local private clinic (and NGO), ProFamilia, is providing us with the space to build huertos.

We have a team of jovenes from the ProFamilia youth group, the youth group from the Casa Adolescencia, as well as students from the high school that are getting ecology hours for helping out; me and my counterpart from MINSA; the youth group leaders; and a representative from FCP/Pueblos Unidos…a partnership program between Jalapa and BOULDER, COLORADO. There are so many connections from back home up here, I love it :)

We will eventually grow some local veggies and sell them to profit the Casa Materna. We’re still getting the plots ready but we will be planting seeds next Tuesday! Some of the veggies include: pepino, pipian, ayote, chiltoma, zanahoria, cebolla, y repollo. You know, the good stuff :)

Almost 3 year ago in Manhattan, New York, UNICEF devised a very original way of raising awareness to the water problem millions of people across the globe are facing every day. The Dirty Water campaign gave people the chance to buy a bottle of disease-infected water, other people are forced to drink on a daily basis. The water-bottles were kept in vending machines across Manhattan and purchased for $1 each.

We thought we would re publish the idea in case you missed it and needed a reminder.

I just want to wish you all the luck in the world on your trip to Nicaragua. I'm going there on the 6th for 2 weeks on a community service project. I'm excited and nervous and cannot wait for what I could imagine is an experience of a life time. I couldn't even imagine going for as long as you'll be there. But I know you'll probably have an amazing time. I can't wait to hear updates of your trip and all the things you get to experience!!
